Amherst Herald-at-Arms
Coat of Arms HistoryThe
origin of heraldry coincided with the need for identification on the
field of battle. The use of the shield as a defensive tool offered a
large and ideal surface on which to present military decorative symbols.
Feudal
overlords sought recognition through the display of symbols unique to
themselves for identification during battle between opposing factions.
The logo also appeared on seals to authenticate instructions and
documents. Illiterate peasants could instantly acknowledge the official
stamp of authority.
The Church relied on official seals
for use by bishops and abbots, as a badge of authority.
Messengers gained rights of passage through the display of the
appropriate symbol. This was particularly important in a day and age
when most land was nominally owned by the crown and political favors in
the form of land grants were deliberately fragmented to avoid the
evolution of powerful magnates and potential enemies.
The
crusades of the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries saw the origins of
heraldry proper, with the cross, in many forms, being the
accepted symbol of ( Western ) European Christendom.
The rapid
acquisition of land and the increase in power and wealth ( this
represented ) , was a feature of these early years. Death in battle and
rampant disease allowed judicious re-marriage and the gaining of
estates. The arms associated with the family land were thus inherited
by the new owner, who added these new arms to those of his own.
The
concept of chivalry and the role of the medieval knight were often
manifested in tournaments. The pageantry of the occasion was accented
by exceptional displays of armorial bearings,
( the coat of arms
) of the participants. The supervision and control of these tournaments
gave birth to the heralds and upon them devolved the responsibility of
regulating the whole business of coats.
Coat of Arms Shield Design The
shield is the indispensible part of the coat of arms. All modern
designs of coats of arms (otherwise known as armorial bearings) claim
the shield as the centerpiece. Designs placed on the shield are called
charges.
The blazon is the narrative description of the armorial bearings. To emblazon the arms is to draw it or paint it in full color.
The
shield can be divided in many different ways, known as the divisions of
the shield . The field of the shield is the background color or colors.
Items placed on the field of the shield are known as charges.
The following are examples of items commonly displayed on coats of arms:
